Google has released the second beta of Android 16 just three weeks after the first. The update enhances camera capabilities, biometric data control, multimedia features, and background process optimization. Key innovations include hybrid autoexposure modes, Ultra HDR support, new permission settings for health-related apps, adaptive video output settings for TVs, and improved system resource management.
Camera and Multimedia Enhancements
One of the main innovations in Android 16 Beta 2 is improved image processing algorithms. Hybrid autoexposure modes now allow users to manually adjust light sensitivity (ISO) or shutter speed while the system automatically optimizes the remaining parameters. This approach, widely used in digital cameras, is now implemented at the system level in a mobile OS for the first time.
Android 16 also introduces new color adjustment tools, giving users more control over color temperature, tints, and shadows. Additionally, a new framework enables third-party apps to request motion photo creation. Ultra HDR support further enhances photo quality by increasing detail and contrast in challenging lighting conditions.
Multimedia capabilities have also been expanded. A new framework automatically adapts audio and video output when transmitting content to TVs, ensuring optimal settings based on device characteristics. This improvement benefits streaming services and gaming applications, enhancing both video and sound quality for a better experience.
Privacy, Performance, and New Features
Android 16 significantly expands user control over health data permissions. Now, users can separately configure access for apps requesting skin temperature and heart rate data or block background data collection. This new framework enhances privacy and gives users more precise control over personal information. Google continues developing health monitoring features, and we’ll keep you updated as more improvements roll out.
Other updates include a regional settings expansion—users can now choose between the English and metric measurement systems. Previously, only temperature units and the first day of the week could be modified. This enhancement improves usability, especially for frequent travelers or those working with different measurement units.
Technical improvements in Android 16 Beta 2 aim to enhance system stability, performance, and adaptability. Notable updates include:
- Improved font support.
- Support for live wallpapers generated from user data.
- System-level control over app-requested tasks.
- More detailed CPU load monitoring for apps.
- Compatibility mode for apps using legacy memory management.
Availability and Testing
Android 16 debuted in November 2024 as a Developer Preview, followed by a second preview in December, reminds NIX Solutions. The first beta arrived three weeks ago, and now, with the release of Beta 2, testing has entered an active phase. The update is available to Android Beta Program participants, specifically for Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and newer models up to the Pixel 9 series. However, users should note that beta versions may contain bugs and cause system instability.
