Free online graphic editor Canva has introduced AI tools for generating images and creating mini-apps using only text queries. Despite concerns from artists about their work being used to train AI, and fears of job replacement, companies continue to integrate these technologies. Canva is no exception.
The new AI assistant, Canva AI, can generate images on request, suggest design solutions for social media and print publications, and even write texts. According to TechCrunch, the Canva Code tool now allows users to create interactive elements like maps and custom calculators that can be embedded in apps and websites. Canva is working with Anthropic on these capabilities, as shared by co-founder and product director Cameron Adams.
Although Canva isn’t leading the AI design market—startups like Cursor and Replit offer similar tools—the integration of artificial intelligence complements Canva’s overall platform. The company also introduced AI-based photo editing features, including automatic retouching and background replacement, further positioning itself as a competitor to Adobe Photoshop and Pixelmator.
Expanding with Spreadsheets and Integrations
Canva has launched its own spreadsheets, called Canva Sheets. These include Magic Insights, a tool for finding patterns in data, and Magic Charts, which automatically transform numbers into on-brand visual graphs. The service now supports integration with popular platforms like Google Analytics and HubSpot, expanding its reach into data visualization and analytics.
These tools reinforce Canva’s aim to make advanced design and development more accessible to a broader user base. While artists and designers remain cautious about the long-term implications of AI in creative fields, Canva’s leadership frames the changes as transformative rather than destructive, notes NIX Solutions.
AI as Transformation, Not Replacement
Cameron Adams has emphasized that AI is not about replacing people, but about reshaping how jobs are done. “Every job will change and adapt to new opportunities. We, in turn, see huge potential in this,” he said. He also noted that recent layoffs at the company were part of a larger restructuring and not directly tied to AI integration.
As the platform continues to grow its AI capabilities and expand integrations, we’ll keep you updated on further developments. Canva’s direction signals a broader shift in how creativity and productivity tools are evolving with the help of artificial intelligence.
