Starting next week, Google Photos will notify users when an image has been modified or combined using artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to enhance transparency about AI-generated edits and foster trust in digital content.
John Fisher, Director of Engineering for Google Photos, explains: “Images edited with tools like Magic Editor, Magic Eraser, and Zoom Enhance already contain metadata following International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) standards, indicating AI use.” With the new update, this metadata will be visible directly within Google Photos, appearing alongside the file name, location, and backup status. This “AI info” feature will be rolled out on both the web and mobile apps.
Expanded AI Tagging System
The system will flag not only generative AI edits but also cases where elements from multiple images are merged. This includes features like “Best Take” or “Add Me” on Pixel smartphones. However, The Verge notes that the metadata can be bypassed, leaving room for deliberate concealment of edits.
“This is a work in progress,” Fisher emphasized. “We will collect feedback and explore additional solutions to improve transparency.” Previously, metadata for AI-assisted edits was mostly hidden from users. Tools like Magic Editor, which insert AI-generated objects not originally present, could potentially mislead viewers, notes NIXSolutions.
Comparing AI Approaches in the Industry
While Google and Samsung actively integrate AI-enhanced editing tools, Apple is opting for a more cautious approach. Apple announced that their upcoming image generation tools, launching in iOS 18.2, will avoid photorealistic content. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP, expressed concerns about AI-generated images undermining photo authenticity. Although photo retouching has existed for years, the accessibility of generative AI tools makes it easier than ever to create realistic fakes.
