Spotify has submitted an update to its iOS app that introduces subscription pricing information and allows users to purchase plans via external links—bypassing Apple’s in-app payment system. This means Spotify will not have to pay Apple a commission when users subscribe using these alternative methods.
The change follows an April 30 ruling, which Spotify says “provides consumers around the world with the benefits they deserve,” calling it “a great day for Spotify users in the US.” In the updated app, users will now be able to:
-
View subscription pricing directly within the app, including detailed plan information and promotional offers
-
Sign up for Premium subscriptions or select Student, Duo, or Family plans
-
Use alternative payment methods outside Apple’s ecosystem, which often offer more variety
-
Make purchases that directly support content creators, such as audiobooks
Spotify described it as “absurd” that it couldn’t previously offer these “essential features,” and said the change finally removes “significant elements of Apple’s anti-competitive barriers.” The company emphasized that these changes are “long overdue.”
Impact on Developers and Content Creators
According to Spotify, the move could “create real opportunities for creators to grow their businesses and share their work with fans through the Spotify platform.” One upcoming feature will enable publishers to sell audiobooks directly within Spotify—no longer requiring users to navigate outside the app to complete purchases.
Spotify is not alone in this transition, adds NIX Solutions. Other developers including Epic Games and Patreon are also submitting app updates with support for external payment methods. Apple, following the court ruling, has been ordered to allow developers to include links to these external payment options immediately.
The update is expected to benefit not just consumers but the broader app ecosystem, fostering more direct relationships between developers and users. Spotify intends to build on this momentum and expand the available features in future updates—we’ll keep you updated as more integrations become available.
